Otranto -Torre del Serpente, il luogo più a Est d’Italia, il punto nel quale, prima che lo dimenticassimo, Occidente e Oriente una volta si toccavano. Oggi la memoria di quel contatto sembra riemergere al seguito dei clandestini che sbarcano sulle spiagge, come ci ricordano i vestiti, le scarpe gli oggetti personali che si trovano lungo la costa. A quanti tra loro non ce l’hanno fatta, abbiamo dedicato il canto del coro polifonico albanese di Lapardha, che all’alba del 5 agosto 2002 ha intonato un brano per le vittime di quell’”incidente” del 1997, nel quale morirono decine di albanesi su una nave speronata dalla marina militare italiana.

Otranto, Torre del Serpente, the easternmost part of Italy, the point where, lest we forget, East and West once touched. Today, the memory of that link seems to re-emerge as a consequence of all the illegal immigrants that disembark on its beaches, as their clothes, shoes and personal effects found along the coast remind us. To those among them that did not make it, we dedicate the canto of the polyphonic Albanian chorus of Lapardha that, on August 5, 2002, at dawn, sang one of its passage for the victims of the 1997 “accident”, in which dozens of Albanians died aboard a boat sunk by the Italian navy.

31 gennaio 2002. Porto di Gallipoli, molo di tramontana. Mentre un anziano pescatore, come ogni giorno, prende il largo con la sua piccola barca, una grande e sconosciuta nave carica di uomini e di donne solca le acque a poche miglia da Gallipoli. Intanto al porto cresce l’attesa.

January 31, 2002. Gallipoli Port, a pier exposed to the northern wind. While an elderly fisherman goes off to sea in his small boat, as he does every day, a large, unknown ship full of men and women floats through the waters a few miles from Gallipoli. In the meantime, the wait builds up back at the port.

Ario Sciolari: "L'ODISSEA BIANCA" a nord di me stesso

Una “scalata” in solitario di 3000 km durata 4 mesi, lungo la catena montuosa norvegese. 5 mesi nel cuore dell'inverno artico, attraverso le montagne più selvagge e isolate d'Europa. Il freddo e gli spazi immensi, il buio e la luce, la solitudine, il coraggio e tanta neve, accompagnano l’avventura di Ario Sciolari. Il documentario si è protratto per diciotto mesi. Le riprese sono in parte dello stesso Ario e in parte della Crew che in alcune tappe lo ha raggiunto, stando attenta a non interferire con il carattere solitario dell’esperienza. A un certo punto, Ario dovrà rinunciare alla compagnia dei suoi cuccioli di lupo a causa dell’inizio della caccia. La telecamera rimarrà la sua unica compagna, come un diario e poi addirittura come una “confidente”.

A lone, 3,000 km “climb” that lasted four months, along the mountainous range of Norway. Five months in the heart of the Arctic cold, through the wildest and most isolated mountains of Europe. The cold and the immense spaces, the dark and the light, solitude, courage and a lot of snow, accompanied the adventures of Ario Sciolari. The documentary was prolonged to 18 months. The film is in part of Ario and, in part, of the crew that caught up with him at certain stages, making certain, however, not to interfere with the solitary aspect of the experience. At a certain point, Ario has to part ways with some wolf cubs he befriended due to the onset of hunting season. The video camera is his only companion, like a diary, and later, even more like a “confidante.”

“Sono stato una vita sparpagliato in mezzo al mare, in mezzo alle nebbie, in mezzo agli uragani, in mezzo al caldo, in mezzo al freddo… facendo queste cose ti accorgi che la vita è importante, è tutto, è bella ma è anche niente….” Luciano Bianco detto Ciano Valardi.

Lu rusciu te lu mare è la narrazione di una delle possibili storie di Gallipoli. Siamo in un luogo sospeso tra isola e terra ferma, in una sincronia di voci e di venti che sussurrano storie lontane ancora presenti. La città vecchia vive di antichi mestieri, di processioni e di memorie, fra quelle mura vivono i pescatori, le famiglie e i loro ricordi. Esistono parole e visi che il tempo non cancella, esistono “vecchi pazzi” che raccontano storie scritte da nessuna parte. Questo film è un omaggio a chi ancora oggi sputa energia vitale.

Lu rusciu te lu mare narrates just one of the possible stories of Gallipoli. We are in a land suspended between an island and terra ferma, in a synchronism of voices and winds, which whisper ever-present faraway stories. The old city lives off of old ancient crafts, processions and memories. Between its walls live the fishermen, the families, and their memories. There exist words and faces that time has not erased, “old madmen” that recount stories not written anywhere. This film pays homage to whoever still today throbs with vital energy.

80 years of Neapolitan football told through unknown faces and the voice of Fabio, a boy from the Sanità quarter, and a variety artist by profession, who offers testimony to the awkwardness in historically describing a football team and a city. Fabio moves through the streets and alleys of Naples like a water diviner in search of places and faces that will give him a taste of the "behind-the-scenes" and the quotidian. He is interested in details, the smaller stories, and the fates of those who have crossed the fantastical world of football, at times remaining at its margins. Il guadagno quotidiano che l’intero nucleo familiare riesce a racimolare è al di sotto delle ventimila lire. Il lavoro a cottimo, l’ombra delle grandi e medie industrie calzaturiere, lo sfruttamento minorile: una storia di ordinaria quotidianità, una storia di “un paese normale”.

1999, Melissano: A small town in the Lecce province. A family made up of a father, a mother and six children, is forced to sew shoes all day long. The entire family scrapes together just over 20,000 lire a day. Ritratto di Glen E. Friedman, considerato oggi uno dei maggiori fotografi americani delle ultime generazioni. Friedman inizia prestissimo la sua attività fotografando, a metà degli anni settanta, i giovani skaters della scena californiana, documentando gli albori dello skate, in quella Dogtown (West Los Angeles) presto divenuta celebre come il fulcro più radicale della scena e dell’evoluzione dello skate. Friedman è parte di questo gruppo e di queste scelte di vita in prima persona: gli skaters erano l’antitesi dei ragazzini perbene che praticavano gli sport nelle little leagues ufficiali; non avevano limiti, non li avrebbero fermati né i divieti, né la polizia, né i cartelli di proprietà privata. Friedman in seguito diventerà il più celebre e apprezzato fotografo della scena musicale prima hard-core e poi hip hop americana. E’ l’eroe del “vaffanculo”. Con questo lavoro, si rende omaggio a un artista, ma soprattutto a un’epoca e a uno stile di vita.

A portrait of Glen E. Friedman, considered today to be one of the greatest American photographers of recent generations. Friedman began taking pictures early on, in the mid 70s, photographing young skateboarders in California, documenting the beginnings of skateboarding, in Dogtown (West Los Angeles), which soon became infamous as the most radical center of the skateboarding scene. Friedman is part of this group and this lifestyle choice: skateboarders were the antithesis of clean-cut kids that played in official little league teams. They had no limits, nor would the police or any "No Trespassing" signs have been able to stop them. Friedman later became the most renowned and appreciated photographer of the music scene, first hard-core music then American hip-hop. He is the hero of the “fuck you all.” With this work, we pay homage to an artist but, above all, to an era and a lifestyle.

ALASKA: CARIBOU DON’T DRINK OIL - 1999

Alaska: Arctic Village, alle appendici delle Brooks Range, un villaggio di indiani Atapaskan del popolo dei Gwich’in, vive in armonia ciclica con la natura. La caccia al caribou è l’unico sostentamento, tutta la loro cultura gira intorno a questo animale ormai da più di 3000 anni, oggi in pericolo per via dello sfruttamento petrolifero che il governo USA effettua e vuole espandere. La presenza di macchine per l’estrazione devia i percorsi millenari dei branchi di caribou mettendo a repentaglio la vita e la cultura dei villaggi Gwich’in e tutto l’ecosistema artico.

Alaska: Arctic Village, at the outskirts of Brooks Range, a community of Atapaskan Native Americans, of the Gwich’in nation, live in cyclical harmony with nature. The hunt for caribou is their only means of livelihood. Furthermore, their entire culture has revolved around this animal for over 3000 years, and is now in danger due to the exploitation of local crude oil that the US government carries out and wants to expand. The presence of the oilrigs diverts the thousands year-old course of the caribou herd, placing the culture of the Gwic’in villages and the entire Arctic ecosystem in jeopardy.

UN IMMAGINE DEL "CHE" - 1998

Siamo nati con immagini che durante il tempo si sono modellate sulla nostra biografia, siamo stati abituati a considerare l'immagine come qualcosa di sacro, di irraggiungibile anche se costantemente vicino, come qualcosa di non modificabile. Le generazioni precedenti alla nostra hanno venerato immagini trasformandole in simboli e con essi si sono identificati. Adesso che i simboli di un tempo stanno cadendo a uno a uno, pronti a essere sostituiti da “atletici” e mutanti segni, alcune immagini del passato si moltiplicano e si modificano, acquistando nuove potenzialità. Tra queste, un'immagine del Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara che, quasi come in un gioco, viene destrutturata, “looppata” e messa su diversi binari della comunicazione visiva, sonora e letterale. Questo strano esercizio si lega all’esperienza di un centro sociale della periferia di Roma, che nel suo stesso nome porta un codice genetico passato, ma in realtà oggi più che mai attuale nelle diverse maniere di viverlo. Il quartiere è Tor Bella Monaca, estrema periferia orientale della capitale.

We are born with images that, over time, have been molded onto our biography. We have gotten used to considering the image as something sacred, unreachable, even if continuously nearby, as something not modifiable. Generations before ours revered images, transforming them into symbols, with which they identified. Now that the symbols of yesterday are falling one by one, ready to be substituted by "athletes" and mutant signs, some images from the past are multiplied and modified, taking on new potential. Among these, an image of Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara that, almost as if in a game, is destroyed, looped and placed on different tracks of visual, sound and literary communication. This strange exercise is tied to the experience of a social center on the outskirts of Rome, that in its very name carries a past genetic code that is topical, today more than ever, in the diverse ways it is experienced. The neighborhood is Tor Bella Monaca, the easternmost part of the capital.

Video in sei capitoli che documenta il dramma degli albanesi sbarcati a Brindisi nel marzo del 1997. “Per voi il muro non è crollato, avete eretto dei muri invisibili”, questa è la voce dello scrittore albanese Metz Jorgy, uno dei protagonisti del video. Il documentario vuole dare la parola soprattutto a chi ha avuto coraggio ed è andato lontano, e vuole raccontare l'esperienza di chi è fuggito e di chi vive in esilio. Di chi è passato per le amministrazioni, le prefetture e i passaggi clandestini alle frontiere. L'esperienza di chi ha attraversato 80 km di mare per dire: “Ci sono anch'io!”

A video in six chapters that documents the drama of the Albanians who landed in Brindisi in March of 1997. “For you, the wall has not fallen. You have erected invisible walls”: this is the voice of Albanian writer Metz Jorgy, one of the video’s protagonists. The documentary wants to give voice, above all, to those who were brave and went far, and wants to recount the experience of those who ran away and live in exile. Il documentario, realizzato nel 1997 nelle assolate terre della provincia di Lecce, racconta di Lotfi e Ruschide, due lavoratori tunisini che ogni anno, insieme a tanti altri immigrati, seguono i flussi e le vicende dei lavori stagionali legati all'agricoltura nel meridione. Il Salento e la raccolta delle angurie come scenario del nuovo nomadismo legato al lavoro nero e alle innumerevoli forme di caporalato. Le storie, i suoni e le percezioni in un video-racconto al confine tra clip e realtà.

The documentary, made in 1997 in the sun-drenched Lecce province, tells the story of Lotfi and Ruschide, two Tunisian workers who, every year, together with many other immigrants, follow the tides and fortunes of the seasonal workers tied to the farming culture of Southern Italy. Salento and the watermelon harvest are the backdrop for a new kind of nomadism tied to illegal work and the numerous forms of exploitation. The stories, sounds and perceptions of a video-tale on the edge, between music video and reality.

Un flusso inarrestabile di immagini e suoni per uno dei primi esperimenti di televisione auogestita.

The video is a montage of excerpts taken from the transmission of Off Line TV, the local Roman television channel which came about during the edition of OFF (Festival di cinema underground al Forte Prenestino in Roma), of which Fluid Video Crew was one of the promoters. An unstoppable flow of images and sounds for one of the first experiments of self-run television.

An assemblage of images, sounds and music, taken from numerous video-installations created by Fluid Video Crew and DJ/musician Pol Gee. The live set is a story in single frames, keeping in time with the music, where the video editing is strictly live: a true psychoactive experience.

L’inizio del lavoro della Fluid Video Crew è stato quello di documentare e di creare veri e propri “cine-giornali” di controinformazione. I video realizzati sono per lo più racconti di cortei, battaglie per i diritti civili, sgomberi di centri sociali e campi rom, scontri con la polizia. Documentari di breve durata che venivano immessi nel circuito di visione della rete dei centri sociali italiani.

Fluid Video Crew’s first works were to document and create real “cine-journals” of counter-information. The videos created are mostly stories of demonstrations, civil rights battles, evacuations of social centers, gypsy encampments and clashes with the police. Short documentaries that were inserted in the programming network of Italian antagonist social centers.

Video di documentazione sulla tre giorni musicale organizzata a Melendugno, in provincia di Lecce, dal gruppo musicale Sud Sound System. Il video sarà distribuito nei negozi musicali e proiettato all' interno del seminario " musica, corpo e trance" tenuto dal sociologo francese George Lapassade, nel corso di laurea di Sociologia dell'Univesità di Roma e nel corso di laurea di Lettere e Filosofia dell' Università di Lecce.

Ma la materia elettrostatica è la stessa che si arricchisce di nuove immagini ripetendosi su se stessa per riciclarsi e adattarsi a nuovi territori. Un audiovisivo elettronico in continua trasformazione ogni proiezione è diversa dalla precedente, concepito per uscire fuori dal solito cubo-tv, e da una visione a kinetoscopio; Proiettato con un un proiettore mobile in una visione collettiva; rave, concerti, dance-hall, installazioni, sono i suoi territori.
Il fattore casualità nel momento del montaggio determina il carattere del linguaggio usato o meglio, l'esclusione di una logica di fine per una riappropriazione spontanea e neutra, cioè un nuovo punto di partenza.
